Native Mac game projects: ports and builders

Each community route on this site comes from a specific project. This page answers “which project is it, does it give me a Mac app, and what do I have to bring?” For the games themselves, including official Mac releases, use the games list.

Switch-native builders: three projects, one approach

Shared

  • The game’s own ARM64 code runs on the Apple chip, a small host answers system services, graphics go through Metal.
  • Your own game files and keys; exact versions only.
  • D2R Mobile came first; MacNativeGames started from its generic parts, and its one-script packaging follows nxnative’s approach (MacNativeGames README, Acknowledgements).

Where they differ for a Mac player

  • MacNativeGames and D2R Mobile produce a Mac app you double-click.
  • nxnative targets iPhone and iPad; on the Mac it is a development host only.
  • Inputs, tools and disk space differ: see what both Mac builders need.

N64 projects: a download plus your ROM

  1. Check the ROM

Ship of Harkinian and 2 Ship 2 Harkinian list supported versions by SHA-1 and offer online checkers (ship.equipment, 2ship.equipment). Zelda 64: Recompiled accepts only the US N64 Majora’s Mask.

  2. Download the Mac zip

From the project’s release page; none of them contains game data.

  3. First launch

macOS may block a downloaded app the first time; use the guide to the exact macOS warning. The app then extracts the game data from your ROM.

Two of these games have guides here: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask (two routes compared).
